Frequently Asked Questions (SIE Exam)
Common questions answered by FINRA licensing instructors:
What is the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam?
The SIE is an entry-level FINRA examination that assesses knowledge of fundamental securities concepts, regulatory agencies, market structure, products, and prohibited practices. It serves as the prerequisite foundation for specialized qualification exams like the Series 7, Series 6, and Series 79.
Do I need a sponsoring broker-dealer to take the SIE?
No. Unlike the Series 7 or Series 66, anyone age 18 or older can register for and take the SIE exam without being employed or sponsored by a FINRA-member firm. This makes the SIE an ideal resume builder for students, career switchers, and prospective finance professionals.
What is the passing score and format for the SIE exam?
The SIE consists of 75 scored multiple-choice questions plus 10 unscored experimental questions (85 total). Candidates have 1 hour and 45 minutes (105 minutes) to complete the test. The passing score is 70% (53 out of 75 scored questions correct).
How long is my passing SIE score valid?
A passing SIE result is valid for four years from the date you pass. During those four years, you can obtain broker-dealer sponsorship and pass a specialized top-off exam (such as the Series 7 or Series 6) without having to retake the SIE.
Does the SIE exam test the new T+1 settlement cycle?
Yes. Under SEC Rule 15c6-1 amendments effective May 2024, standard settlement for U.S. equities, corporate bonds, and municipal securities is T+1 (one business day after trade date). This study guide reflects T+1 across all trading and clearing lessons.
Which section has the highest question concentration on the SIE?
Section 2 (Understanding Products and Their Risks) carries 44% of the exam (33 out of 75 questions), covering common and preferred stocks, municipal and corporate debt, mutual funds, ETFs, and options basics. Section 3 (Trading and Accounts) follows closely at 31% (23 questions).
