Free AP Music Theory Practice Exam Guide
Our free AP Music Theory practice test simulates the multiple-choice section with original questions and in-browser audio. Here is how to get the most out of it.
What the practice exam covers
College Board describes Section I as 75 multiple-choice questions in about 1 hour 20 minutes, split into an aural part (41โ43 questions, about 45 minutes) and a nonaural part (32โ34 questions, 35 minutes), worth 45% of the score (AP Central). Our simulation uses 42 aural questions in 45 minutes and 33 notated questions in 35 minutes, drawn from 296 original items across all eight course units.
Aural items cover intervals, chord qualities and inversions, cadences, scales and modes, meter, rhythm, short melodic and harmonic dictation, non-chord tones, and spotting differences between a notated melody and what is played. Notated items cover key signatures, intervals and chords on the staff, Roman numerals, figured bass, voice-leading errors, cadences, non-chord tones, motives, secondary dominants, modulation and form.
How to simulate test conditions
- Use headphones in a quiet room and take both parts in one sitting.
- Keep the play limit on to practice committing to an answer โ the limit is our setting, not an official rule.
- Answer every question; leaving one blank scores the same as a wrong answer in our results.
How to review
Start with the unit table on the results screen. For your weakest unit, run a 20-question music theory quiz on just that unit and read every explanation. If aural intervals or chords cost you points, spend ten minutes a day in interval ear training and chord ear training, and keep the cheat sheet open for rules you miss.
What it can't simulate
Our audio is synthesized, so timbre and performance nuance are simpler than on the real exam. Free response (45%) and sight-singing (10%) are not scored here; use the released free-response questions on AP Central for those. See the AP Music Theory exam overview for the full format.
