PMI PMP Practice Questions
PMI PMP® Examination Content Outline (ECO) 3-Domain Structure
The 100 questions in this practice set map proportionally to PMI's 3 official domains:
People
Focuses on the interpersonal and leadership skills needed to guide project teams and stakeholders across predictive, agile, and hybrid environments: developing a common vision, managing conflict, leading and empowering the team, engaging stakeholders and managing their expectations, knowledge transfer, and communication.
- Conflict Management & Resolution Techniques
- Leading & Empowering the Team (Servant Leadership)
- Stakeholder Engagement & Expectation Management
Process
Covers the technical work of planning and delivering a project across the full lifecycle: the integrated plan and development approach, scope (WBS, user stories), value-based delivery, resources, procurement, finance and reserves, quality, schedule (Critical Path Method, velocity, burndown charts), status and Earned Value Management (CPI, SPI, EAC), and project or phase closure.
- Scope & Requirements (WBS, Backlog Refinement, User Stories)
- Schedule & Flow (Critical Path Method, Velocity, Burndown Charts)
- Cost, Finance & Earned Value Management (EVM: CV, SV, CPI, SPI, EAC)
Business Environment
Expanded from 8% to 26% in the July 2026 outline. Connects the project to governance and its wider context: establishing project governance and escalation paths, managing compliance (security, health and safety, sustainability, regulatory), controlling changes, removing impediments and managing issues, planning and managing risk, continuous improvement, supporting organizational change, and evaluating external changes such as regulation, technology, and markets.
- Project Governance & Compliance
- Integrated Change Control
- Risk Planning, Responses & Monitoring

What is the format, duration, and passing score of the PMI PMP® examination?
Under the Exam Content Outline that took effect in July 2026, the PMP exam has 180 questions (170 scored + 10 unscored pretest) and 240 minutes of exam time, with two 10-minute breaks. The first break comes after the case-study section and the second roughly midway through the remaining questions; once you start a break you cannot return to the questions before it. Item types include multiple choice (single and multiple response), matching, drag-and-drop, point-and-click (hotspot), pull-down lists, and two new types: case or scenario sets and graphic-based questions. PMI does not publish a passing score; results are reported as performance ratings by domain. You can take the exam up to three times within your 1-year eligibility period.
How is the PMP exam weighted across the 3 official ECO domains?
The July 2026 Examination Content Outline (ECO) weights the exam across 3 domains: Domain 1.0 People (33%), Domain 2.0 Process (41%), and Domain 3.0 Business Environment (26%). That works out to roughly 56, 70, and 44 of the 170 scored questions. Business Environment grew sharply from 8% and now includes governance, compliance, change control, impediments and issues, risk, continuous improvement, and external changes. About 40% of items represent predictive approaches and about 60% represent agile/adaptive or hybrid approaches (previously about 50/50).
What changed for the PMP 35-hour training requirement?
You still need 35 hours of project management training aligned to the Exam Content Outline (an active CAPM waives it). Starting December 1, 2026, live instructor-led classes, in person or online, count only when delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner, a China Registered Education Provider, or an eligible accredited higher-education program (including PMI GAC programs). Self-paced, on-demand courses from any organization still count. Books and practice exams alone do not. Check PMI's directory before enrolling.
How does the PMP test predictive vs. agile project management?
Rather than testing isolated definitions, scenarios require candidates to identify the project environment (predictive, agile, or hybrid) and apply the appropriate mindset. In predictive scenarios, candidates enforce formal integrated change control, baselines, and CPM scheduling. In agile scenarios, candidates apply servant leadership, eliminate team impediments, embrace changing requirements via backlog refinement, and foster self-organizing teams.
What are the essential Earned Value Management (EVM) formulas to memorize?
Core EVM formulas: Cost Variance (CV = EV - AC), Schedule Variance (SV = EV - PV), Cost Performance Index (CPI = EV / AC), Schedule Performance Index (SPI = EV / PV), Estimate at Completion for typical future variances (EAC = BAC / CPI), Estimate to Complete (ETC = EAC - AC), and To-Complete Performance Index (TCPI = [BAC - EV] / [BAC - AC]). Negative variances and indices below 1.0 indicate unfavorable performance.
What is the standard PMI mindset for resolving team conflict?
Collaborating (Problem Solving / Confronting) is PMI's preferred conflict resolution strategy in ~80% of situations because it examines objective facts to reach lasting consensus. Forcing (Directing) is justified strictly in acute emergencies involving human safety, ethical violations, or non-negotiable legal compliance.
