What ITIL Foundation (Version 5) covers

PeopleCert, which owns ITIL, describes Version 5 as "AI-native by design" and is introducing it in a phased release. The official name is ITIL Foundation (Version 5); "ITIL 5" is the common shorthand.

PeopleCert's Foundation page lists these topics: digital product and service management concepts, value co-creation, the four dimensions, the ITIL value system, the guiding principles, the product and service lifecycle, the management practices, continual improvement, and value stream mapping and management. It publishes no percentage weights, so we don't quote any.

ITIL 4 holders: the Foundation Bridge (Version 5)

The Bridge covers only what changed: 20 multiple-choice questions, 30 minutes, closed book, 65% to pass. It is open to holders of any ITIL 4 certification except the Acquiring and Managing Cloud Services and Sustainability in Digital and IT specialist modules. PeopleCert lists the Bridge at US$263 (exam bundle), US$476 (eLearning) and US$620 (eLearning+).

The Bridge is optional: ITIL 4 certificates remain valid prerequisites for higher Version 5 modules. PeopleCert plans to retire all ITIL 4 modules and the Bridge on December 31, 2027.

Renewal and what comes next

Version 5 certificates renew every three years with 60 CPD points (20 a year through PeopleCert Plus) or by passing another certification in the same suite. An ITIL 4 certificate can be renewed by passing any ITIL (Version 5) certification.

After Foundation, PeopleCert lists three designations: Practice Manager, Managing Professional and Strategic Leader. ITIL Transformation counts toward all three, and holding all three leads to ITIL Master. ITIL AI Governance (Version 5) is an extension module with no prerequisite.

Five mistakes that fail people on the ITIL 5 exam

From our ITIL 5 mistakes video. The fixes are our study advice, not PeopleCert rules.

How to study

Our plan, not PeopleCert's: two to three weeks at about an hour a day if you are new to ITIL, or about a week on the changes if you hold ITIL 4. Week one: the value system, the seven guiding principles and the four dimensions. Week two: the lifecycle, the practice definitions and value streams. Week three: timed practice, then book the exam once you are scoring well above 26 of 40.

Key ITIL Terms and Definitions

A team launches a self-service password reset portal. Users now get back to work in minutes. Which is correct?

  1. The portal is an outcome, and getting back to work faster is an output
  2. Both the portal and the faster recovery are outputs
  3. The portal is an output, and getting back to work faster is an outcome
  4. Both the portal and the faster recovery are outcomes
Show answer

C. The portal is an output, and getting back to work faster is an outcome

An output is a deliverable of an activity, like the portal. An outcome is a result for a stakeholder, enabled by one or more outputs, like users getting back to work faster. Providers deliver outputs, but consumers care about outcomes.

The ITIL Four Dimensions of Product and Service Management

A service desk struggles: roles are unclear, teams don't share knowledge, and staff lack skills for new tools. Which dimension?

  1. Organizations and people
  2. Information and technology
  3. Partners and suppliers
  4. Value streams and processes
Show answer

A. Organizations and people

Roles and responsibilities, culture, structure, and skills all belong to organizations and people. The new tools are part of the story, but the problem described here is about people: who does what, how they share, and what they know.

The ITIL Product and Service Lifecycle

Which statement about the eight ITIL Product and Service Lifecycle activities is correct?

  1. They must run in a fixed order, starting with discover
  2. Each activity can happen only once per product
  3. They are not sequential or linear, and can be used iteratively
  4. Only the support activity involves consumers
Show answer

C. They are not sequential or linear, and can be used iteratively

PeopleCert's syllabus is clear that the lifecycle activities are neither sequential nor linear. Teams combine them and repeat them as needed, often many times for one product. Discover isn't a one-time starting gate.

The ITIL Value System

Which is NOT a component of the ITIL value system?

  1. Guiding principles
  2. Governance
  3. The four dimensions
  4. Continual improvement
Show answer

C. The four dimensions

The ITIL value system has five components: guiding principles, governance, the value chain, management practices, and continual improvement. The four dimensions are hugely important, but they're a separate model, not a component of the value system.

Value Stream Identification, Mapping and Management

Which best describes a value stream?

  1. A series of steps an organization takes to create and deliver value for its consumers
  2. A list of every I T asset the organization owns
  3. The annual budget for a service
  4. A single incident record
Show answer

A. A series of steps an organization takes to create and deliver value for its consumers

A value stream is the series of steps an organization takes to create and deliver products and services, and so enable value for consumers. It includes the flow of information and digital work, not just people's activities.

ITIL and AI Β· ITIL and Other Frameworks

An organization wants to bring AI into its service management. What does ITIL guidance put first?

  1. Setting a strategy and a governance model, before choosing A I technologies
  2. Buying the most advanced A I tool available
  3. Letting each team pick its own A I tools
  4. Waiting until competitors have adopted A I
Show answer

A. Setting a strategy and a governance model, before choosing A I technologies

ITIL's guidance says to set a strategy and a governance model before selecting AI technologies. That covers decisions, risk, responsible use, data governance, and regulation. Tools come after you know why you need them and how they'll be controlled.
