How long is the insurance license exam?

It depends on the state and the license line. These are the official time limits, question counts, passing scores and retake rules we could verify for Texas, Florida and Washington, each tied to the handbook or outline it comes from.

Florida

Florida lists scored and pretest questions separately for each exam.

  • Health & Life (including Annuities & Variable Contracts): 150 scored plus 15 pretest questions; time limit 2.75 hours.
  • Life (including Annuities & Variable Contracts): 85 scored plus 10 pretest; 2 hours.
  • General Lines (property and casualty): 160 scored plus 15 pretest; 3 hours.
  • Personal Lines: 100 scored plus 8 pretest; 2 hours.
  • Passing score for all exams is 70%, computed as questions answered correctly divided by total examination questions.

The 2024 handbook lists the same time limits. The question counts above are from the outlines effective January 1, 2026.

Texas

Texas publishes time allotted and fee by exam, with a scaled passing score of 70.

  • Life, Accident & Health (English): 150 minutes; $49.
  • Property & Casualty (English): 150 minutes; $49.
  • Life Agent (English): 120 minutes; $39.
  • Personal Lines Property & Casualty (English): 120 minutes; $39.
  • Each major lines exam has a general section and a Texas-specific state section, scored as a whole. Raw scores are converted to a 0-100 scaled score with a passing score of 70, so a score of 70 is not the same as 70% correct.

Washington

Washington's Life and Disability combo is listed at 150 items in 195 minutes.

PSI's Washington bulletin lists 150 items, a 195-minute limit and a 70% passing score for the Life and Disability Producer Combo. Some items may be experimental and unscored but still count against the time limit.

Retakes and check-in

Retake rules differ, and both vendors want you there early.

  • Texas: a candidate who fails can schedule a new exam within one day, and there is no limit on attempts for the same exam.
  • Florida: a limit of five attempts for the same exam type in a 12-month period; a passing score is valid for one year.
  • Both the Texas and Florida handbooks tell candidates to report to the test center 30 minutes before the exam.
  • Florida: change or cancel online at least 48 hours ahead or the exam fee is forfeited.
