Resident checklist

Use this order for a first full-line resident license.

  • Be at least 18 and meet Washington’s trustworthiness and competency standard.
  • Prepare for and pass the Life and Disability Producer Combo exam through PSI.
  • Submit the license application; keep the OIC/NIPR transaction information.
  • After applying, schedule the electronic fingerprints required for resident applicants.
  • Finish application requirements within 180 days after passing or expect to retake the examination.

Before you study

A course can help, but Washington does not require producer PLE.

That means a self-study plan is viable, but it also means you need to be deliberate about the official outline, Washington law, and timed practice. Do not pay for a course because a generic checklist says you need a completion certificate.

If a provider says a Washington PLE certificate is required to schedule this exam, stop and verify with the OIC first.

Resident or nonresident

Fingerprinting is different for nonresident applicants.

OIC’s fingerprint page says resident applicants use electronic fingerprints for the background check. It says nonresident applicants do not have a Washington fingerprint requirement. Nonresident, reciprocal, business-entity, and moving-state situations have different licensing paths—use the OIC full-and-limited-lines page rather than this resident checklist.

After issuance

Plan for maintenance, not just the first pass.

Washington’s resident-producer continuing-education baseline is 24 credits every two years, including 3 ethics credits. Confirm your individual renewal date and any line-specific requirements with the OIC.
