CBEST Practice Test: 50 Reading and Math Questions With Answers
Practice for the CBEST with the 50 original reading and math questions from our practice-test video, each with an explanation, then check the official format, the scoring rules, the fee and how to plan the two writing essays.
The CBEST has three sections, each its own session: Reading (50 multiple-choice questions, 1 hour 30 minutes), Mathematics (50 multiple-choice questions, 2 hours, no calculator) and Writing (2 essays, 1 hour 30 minutes). Each section is scored 20 to 80 and 41 passes, but one or two sections as low as 37 can pass if the three scores total at least 123. Each section costs $30.

CBEST Practice Test 2026: 50 Reading & Math Questions With Answers (+ Writing Essay Tips)
CBEST practice test: 50 questions
These are the questions from our CBEST practice-test video: 25 reading questions with short original passages and 25 math questions, grouped by content area. Work the math by hand, as on test day. Pick an answer and press Check Answer to see the explanation; missed questions go to a retry queue. Every question is original, not from a real CBEST.
The real CBEST reports scaled scores, so there is no exact percentage to aim for. As a planning goal, 40 or more of 50 (80%) is a comfortable target in our estimate, not a CBEST score. Check reading and math separately too, since each section is scored on its own.
What the CBEST tests
The test structure gives approximate weights for the content areas in Reading and Mathematics. Our practice set follows the same split.
| Section | Content area | Approximate weight |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Comprehension and Research | About 60% |
| Reading | Critical Analysis and Evaluation | About 40% |
| Mathematics | Estimation, Measurement, and Statistical Principles | About 30% |
| Mathematics | Computation and Problem Solving | About 35% |
| Mathematics | Numerical and Graphic Relationships | About 35% |
| Writing | One analytical essay and one personal-experience essay | 2 essays |

How CBEST passing scores work
Each of the three sections is reported on a scale from 20 to 80, and the passing score for a section is 41. You must pass all three sections, but the CBEST has a safety net: one or two sections may be as low as 37 as long as your three scores add up to at least 123. Any section below 37 fails, whatever the total.
Each essay is read by at least two scorers on a 4-point scale against six criteria: rhetorical force, organization, support and development, usage, structure and conventions, and appropriateness to the audience and purpose.
California's Commission on Teacher Credentialing says CBEST passing scores remain valid indefinitely, so a section you pass now still counts later.
Do you even need the CBEST?
Check before you register. The CBEST testing site says the CBEST is no longer required for most teaching credentials if you hold a bachelor's degree, and the Commission's basic skills leaflet says a bachelor's degree is how most applicants now meet California's basic skills requirement.
Other routes include qualifying college coursework with a grade of B or better, certain SAT or ACT scores, AP scores of 3 or higher in English and in Calculus or Statistics, the CSET Multiple Subjects plus Writing Skills, or another state's basic skills exam. Your credential program or district tells you which option it accepts.
How to use this practice test
Reading misses: go back to the passage and find the exact line that proves the answer before you choose. On critical analysis questions, ask what the author wants you to believe, and what would change your mind. Opinion words such as best or beautiful mark a judgment, not a fact.
Math misses: redo each one by hand and check it with an estimate. Percent and fraction problems are where most points slip, so do a few every day without a calculator. Remember that a percentile compares you with other test takers, not with a perfect score.
Planning the two CBEST essays
One essay asks you to analyze a situation or statement; the other asks you to write about a personal experience. No special knowledge is needed. Spend a few minutes planning, state one clear central idea early, give each paragraph one point with a specific example, and keep the topic and audience named in the prompt in view.
With 1 hour 30 minutes for both essays, about 45 minutes each is a workable split in our estimate. Save a few minutes at the end to fix spelling and punctuation, and write one timed practice essay of each type before test day.

Comprehension and Research
Many schools now start the day with ten minutes of silent reading. Teachers report calmer classrooms, and reluctant readers begin choosing books. The routine costs nothing. The main idea is that the routine:
- Requires special teacher training
- Is a simple, low-cost habit with real benefits
- Replaces regular reading lessons
- Works only for strong readers
Show answer
B. Is a simple, low-cost habit with real benefits
It's a simple, low-cost habit with real benefits. Every sentence supports that: calmer rooms, reluctant readers choosing books, and no cost. Nothing says it needs training or replaces lessons, and it helps reluctant readers, not only strong ones.
Critical Analysis and Evaluation
Which of these statements is an opinion rather than a fact?
- The school opened in 1998.
- The gym holds 600 people.
- The new mural is the most beautiful in the city.
- Classes start at 8:10 a.m.
Show answer
C. The new mural is the most beautiful in the city.
The new mural is the most beautiful in the city. Most beautiful is a personal judgment that can't be proved. The opening year, the gym's capacity, and the start time can all be checked.
Estimation, Measurement, and Statistical Principles
How many inches are in 4 feet 3 inches?
- 43
- 48
- 51
- 55
Show answer
C. 51
51. There are 12 inches in a foot, so four feet is 48 inches. Add the extra three inches to get 51.
Computation and Problem Solving
What is 3/4 + 2/3?
- 5/7
- 1 5/12
- 1 1/6
- 5/12
Show answer
B. 1 5/12
One and five twelfths. Use a common denominator of 12: three fourths is nine twelfths and two thirds is eight twelfths. Together that's 17 twelfths, or one and five twelfths. Never add the bottoms.
Numerical and Graphic Relationships
School enrollment grew from 400 students to 460 students. What was the percent increase?
- 6%
- 15%
- 13%
- 60%
Show answer
B. 15%
15%. The change is 60 students. Divide by the original 400: 60 over 400 is 15 hundredths, or 15%. 60 is the change, not the percent.
CBEST FAQ
How many questions are on the CBEST?
Reading has 50 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 30 minutes, Mathematics has 50 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, and Writing has 2 essays in 1 hour 30 minutes. Each section is a separate session.
What is a passing score on the CBEST?
41 on each section's 20 to 80 scale. One or two sections can be as low as 37 if your three section scores total at least 123; any section below 37 fails.
Can I use a calculator on the CBEST math section?
No. Calculators are prohibited on the Mathematics section, so practice computing by hand.
How much does the CBEST cost?
$30 per section, so $90 if you take Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. Each section is a separate testing session.
Do I need to take the CBEST if I have a bachelor's degree?
Usually not. The testing site says the CBEST is no longer required for most teaching credentials if you hold a bachelor's degree. Confirm with your credential program, since requirements depend on the credential.
